A Landscape Architect is a professional responsible for planning and designing the landscapes of parks, gardens, recreational facilities, private properties, residential complexes, campuses, and other outdoor spaces.

What Does a Landscape Architect Do?

Landscape architects undertake projects aimed at enhancing the natural appearance of an area or region while creating environmental benefits. Depending on the type of area and project they work on, their responsibilities may vary. The main professional responsibilities of a landscape architect can be summarized as follows:

  • Meeting with clients, engineers, and architects to develop the project,
  • Preparing design proposals using computer-aided design and visualization software such as CAD and 3D Max,
  • Determining the materials to be used in landscape design and establishing the required quality standards,
  • Estimating the overall project cost and completion schedule,
  • Coordinating the preparation and organization of land, gardens, and other areas where landscape design will be implemented,
  • Researching and taking into consideration the opinions of local residents and potential users,
  • Conducting and implementing the necessary site inspections,
  • Ensuring compliance with the agreed project completion schedule,
  • Analyzing environmental reports related to site conditions, including drainage and energy use,
  • Providing consultancy on environmental protection issues,
  • Collaborating with other professionals such as architects, urban planners, and civil engineers.

Why Is Landscape Design Important?

Landscape architecture introduces artistic and scientific principles, as well as innovative approaches, to the planning, design, management, conservation, and rehabilitation of natural and built environments.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that landscape architecture can contribute significantly to saving our world. Why? On a macro scale, as more and more people migrate to larger and increasingly crowded cities, urban design and the consequences of poor planning become increasingly critical.

Think about what affects your daily life the most: heavy traffic, inadequate infrastructure, pollution, excessive heat, and poor air quality. All of these factors can affect your health on a daily basis, and they all fall within the professional scope of landscape architecture.

Traffic congestion, for example, can be an indication of poor urban planning. Landscape architecture is not simply about beautifying an area. It is about creating functional spaces, introducing new ways of living, developing new public spaces, and improving quality of life while maintaining a strong focus on ecological principles.

Developing a comprehensive landscape plan together with architectural designs can provide clients with a higher standard of living.

It also helps ensure better results while providing significant cost savings. Planning the landscape design of a property together with the architectural design of a building makes the overall project more functional and usable.

Another important example of the value of landscape architecture is its contribution to children’s health and psychological development. Landscape architects make significant efforts to create spaces where children can experience the enjoyable and inspiring qualities of nature.

For all these reasons, the future of landscape architecture is extremely important and deserves greater recognition. It is a field of science and professional practice that should receive greater attention and value from both public institutions and society.

Green spaces and well-designed landscapes mean greater livability. They contribute directly to both mental and physical well-being.

How Are Landscape Architecture Fees Determined?

Independent landscape architecture services are evaluated within the framework of the applicable regulations and the landscape architecture service specifications, directives, landscape architecture service classifications, monitoring forms, minimum fee schedules, and similar provisions established in accordance with these regulations.

Professional supervision is carried out to verify that independent landscape architecture services are provided by registered and authorized independent landscape architecture offices and landscape architects and that these services comply with the applicable minimum fee requirements.

If any non-compliance is identified, the necessary corrections are requested. Otherwise, the matter is recorded on the member’s Professional Supervision Application Form.

The professional supervision process is carried out on behalf of the Chamber by the secretary member. When necessary, this authority may be delegated to professional supervision officers appointed by the Board of Directors.

The professional supervision procedure is completed within a maximum of three business days from the date on which the required documents are submitted.

The Chamber is authorized to supervise independent landscape architecture services in terms of applicable legislation, planning and urban development principles, ecological and conservation principles, public and social interests, professional ethics, and other relevant considerations.

Such supervision is carried out by committees established by the Board of Directors at the headquarters and/or branch offices.

The working procedures of these committees, their budgets, the method for selecting independent landscape architecture services to be reviewed within the framework of the principles stated above, and other related matters are determined in accordance with decisions adopted by the General Assembly and/or the Board of Directors of the Chamber.

Where Can Landscaping Be Applied?

Landscaping applications are planning and implementation works carried out in outdoor areas surrounding buildings and structures. They are designed in accordance with landscape principles, the characteristics of the existing structures, and the needs and expectations of users.

Landscape applications aim to create sustainable living environments with high visual and environmental quality. Through careful planning and design, landscaping adds beauty, character, and functionality to the environments in which we live.

Plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, and stone-paved walkways are among the most important elements used in landscaping applications and can be considered the fundamental building blocks of landscape design.

Landscaping can be carried out for many different purposes. These include meeting people’s needs, concealing unattractive views, solving problems in challenging areas, adding color and vitality, allowing seasonal changes to be experienced, creating harmony and contrast, balancing open and occupied spaces, creating visually and aesthetically pleasing environments, contributing to cleaner air, improving quality of life, strengthening people’s connection with nature, and increasing productivity.

Other objectives may include creating specific functional areas within a space and using design techniques to make an area appear larger or smaller.

The characteristics of the area where landscaping will be implemented are extremely important. The shape of the site, the structure of the land, and its specific characteristics should be carefully examined.

It is also essential to determine whether the plants selected for the project are suitable for the characteristics and conditions of the site. The future growth and development of plants should be taken into consideration to ensure that the overall structure and integrity of the landscape design are maintained over time.

Color harmony is just as important as the structures and materials used in landscaping projects. Green, as the symbol of nature, vitality, and tranquility, is generally the primary color in landscape applications.

Depending on the characteristics of the area, different shades of green can be used to create a sense of depth and spaciousness. Contrasting colors can also be used to effectively highlight specific areas and create visual emphasis.

Elements such as natural or decorative stones, swimming pools, water features, and boundary structures can be selected according to the needs and preferences of users.

With all these characteristics and possibilities, landscaping applications are comprehensive works that create new, functional, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing living spaces.
